I began this suite of acrylic paintings and pastels during the summer of 1995 in the south of France and completed it back home in 1996. The pastels were done while travelling in the various regions of France including Provence, where the special light of the south feeds the eye. The canvases, mainly done following this trip, reflect the influence of that sunlight, and also the legacy of the many great artists who painted there. Like an echo of the Provencal fields and hills bathed in summer sun, these abstract impressions derive from a direct experience of working in a place seemingly made for painters, one in which colour and light create the landscape.
